dr. Cécil Meulenberg received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in medical biology from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In 2001, he received his doctorate in the field of neurotoxicology at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht, Netherlands. As a medical biologist, he specialized in the field of cellular electrophysiology.
After completing his doctorate, he participated in numerous international scientific projects in the fields of neuroscience, toxicology, audiology and oncology, namely at the University of Utrecht and Groningen (Netherlands), the University of Oslo (Norway), and the University of Sussex (Great Britain).
In 2008, he moved to Slovenia. In recent years, at the University of Primorska, he has developed and implemented a master’s course that connects knowledge about the brain with nutrition, behavior and the occurrence of various diseases (Nutrition and the Brain).
Since 2017, he has been working as a researcher at the Institute for Kinesiology Research (IKARUS) ZRS. In cooperation with local and international partners, he develops research projects in the field of kinesiology and aging, with an emphasis on alternative therapies and healthy nutrition, which would have a positive impact on people’s health in all stages of life.
Living in the Mediterranean inspired him to develop interdisciplinary projects with a focus on sustainable food systems that focus on marine aquaculture, their impact on the environment and the ecosystem services they provide, and the promotion of various aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle: nutrition, physical activity, environmental awareness and ecosystem value.
For ZRS Koper he is involved in various project at the Institute for Kinesiology Research (TwinBrain, Fatigue FWO-ARRS project) and the Mediterranean institute for Environmental Studies (since July 2022 coordinating Smart Control of the Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities – SCORE for ZRS MIOS).
For this interinstitutional position he is involved in local projects (DOBRO ZA MORJE – DOBRO ZAME; Okusi morje 2 – Izobraževanje o klapavicah) and develops projects that include approaches as described above.
He published the results as a first and co-author in various peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Biography:
Cécil Meulenberg obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in medical biology at the medicine faculty of Utrecht university in the Netherlands. In 2001 he succesfully defended his Ph.D. in neurotoxcicology at the veterinary faculty of Utrecht university entitled ”In vitro approaches to improve the risk assessment of volatile organic solvents”.
Cécil Meulenberg is a medical biologist with a strong background in cellular electrophysiology, and has been involved in neuroscience-, toxicology-, audiology- and oncology projects affiliated through Universities of Utrecht and Groningen (The Netherlands), Oslo (Norway), Sussex (United Kingdom), and Primorska (Slovenia). At the latter university he developed and lectured for several years a selective master course on the interrelation of the brain, nutrition, physiology, behaviour and disease. At the Science and Research Centre of Koper he is developing research projects in collaboration with local and international stakeholders, in the fields of kinesiology and aging with a focus on alternative therapies and sustainable food sources beneficially influencing health across the lifespan.
He published the results as a first and co-author in various peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Research activity:
From 2010 till 2014 he was appointed as a part-time researcher in the project J3-4259 ”Preparation and validation of therapeutic plasmids without selection gene for antibiotic resistance for cancer gene therapy using inducible and tissue-specific promotors” within the research programme P3-0003 ”Development and evaluation of new approaches to cancer treatment” at the faculty of health sciences of the University of Primorska. From March 2017 onwards he is appointed through L7-9421 ”Decomposition of skeletal muscle tensiomyograms and identification of contractile parameters sensitive to muscular adaptations” as part of P5-0381 ”Kinesiology for quality of life”.
Editor of international conference ”Public health in the 21st century”, Izola, Slovenia, 15-16 September 2011 organised by College of health care Izola, Slovenia. Member of scientific committee, ”Slovenian Day of Dietitians and Nutritionists – Second Scientific Conference with International Participation”, Izola, Slovenia, 19 September 2014, organised by Faculty of Health Sciences University of Primorska. Since 2017 editor of scientific journal Annales kinesiologiae at the Science and Research Centre of Koper. Member of Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), Dutch Neurofederation, and Biopsychology Association Slovenia.
