Population growth, urbanisation, industrial expansion, and environmental degradation contribute to many of the challenges we are currently facing. The transition to sustainable forms of development, limited by the carrying capacity of ecosystems, is therefore a necessary and responsible choice.

New sustainable solutions can only be the result of a more ethical and socially responsible mindset, way of life, and technological development. The Mediterranean Institute for Environmental Studies (MIOS) studies the key factors of the current environmental crisis and works with a large interdisciplinary team to offer solutions for a better coexistence of humans with other living beings on this planet, a mosaic of diverse but sustainable societies and lifestyles, and a responsible use of natural resources.

Researchers develop applied research projects in the areas of climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation and restoration, green infrastructure development, and ecological connectivity enhancement. We provide support in the implementation of research and projects, as well as in the organisation and delivery of educational and training events.
