In the decade since the formal beginning of its operation, the Institute for Historical Studies (IZŠ) has established itself as a Slovenian and European point of reference for researching the history of the border area of western Slovenia, and also as a key actor in asserting views on Slovenian history from its various geographical regions. By treating the coastal area as a “space of contact” of cultures, mentalities, and nations, he significantly contributed to the awareness and knowledge of the historical image of the Slovenian Mediterranean.

Dr Egon Pelikan, Principal Research Associate

Who we are

IZŠ was founded in 2004, and its program and personnel core was formed at the very beginning of ZRS in 1996. The institute’s research program focuses on the history of western Slovenia, the coastal and Istrian area as a geographically complex region and a historical, ethnic and cultural junction between Central Europe and the Mediterranean on the one hand and between the European East and West on the other. The research work of the institute’s colleagues is dedicated to the study of history in this area of contact, and its result is internationally established and content- and methodologically diverse historical research, which includes the perspectives of legal, political, national, economic and oral history, everyday history, biographical history, demographic history, etc.

Competencies and achievements

The research program of IZŠ focuses on the study of the coastal and Istrian border area, which lies at the cultural junction between Central Europe and the Mediterranean. The topics of study refer to the social, economic, anthropological, sociological, political, diplomatic, military and cultural aspects of the entire regional space, both on a macro- and micro-analytical level in individual historical periods and in the perspective of “long-term” history. In accordance with the program guidelines, special emphasis is placed on overcoming the strict separation between disciplines and encouraging researchers to interdisciplinary work and methodological innovation.
