The focal point of the research programme of the Institute for Historical Studies (IZŠ) is the history of western Slovenia and of the Slovenian Littoral (Primorska) in the context of the history of the northern Adriatic.

The IZŠ has established itself as a Slovenian and European point of reference for researchers in Slovenia and in the rest of Europe in the investigation of the history of the borderland of today’s western Slovenia. Its coverage of the Slovenian Littoral (Primorska) as an “area of contact” between cultures, mind-sets, nations, etc., has contributed significantly to the awareness and knowledge of the historical portrait of the Slovenian Mediterranean and the broader northern Adriatic region.

There are currently 14 researchers employed by the institute and one early-stage researcher. This research team includes three members of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (German scientific institution), one Marie Skłodowska Curie fellow, and one member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU). Members of the institute have – in the past 5 years alone – published over 20 monographs and 60 scientific articles with some of the most renowned scientific publishers in Europe.
