Dr. Maša Saccara, B.A. Archaeology Scientific Associate

Dr. Maša Saccara, a scientific associate and museum advisor, specialises in prehistoric archaeology of the northern Adriatic region. She is an expert in the Bronze and Iron Age periods, particularly in ceramic finds. She has been active in the professional and scientific international arena since her undergraduate studies, having gained insights into the activities of research and museum institutions in Italy and Austria through scholarships. She has been a member of numerous international archaeological teams in France, Croatia, and Austria. She actively participates in international conferences and is involved in international projects. As a museum advisor, she focuses on the protection and interpretation of movable archaeological cultural heritage through numerous notable exhibitions. As a researcher, she studies and scientifically examines the settlement material culture and structures from the Bronze and Iron Age in the Upper Adriatic region, known as castellieri.

In 1998, she successfully completed her undergraduate programme in archaeology at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology, with a thesis titled “Kaštelir pri Novi vasi/Brtonigla.” In 2003, she completed her scientific master’s studies at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology, with a master’s thesis titled “Kaštelir pri Novi vasi/Brtonigla – An Example of Settlement Material Culture from the Late Bronze and Iron Age in Istria.” In 2012, she completed her doctoral studies at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities, in the Mediterranean History programme, with a doctoral dissertation titled “Prehistoric Pottery between the Gulf of Muggia and the Mirna River Basin.”

In 1998, she began working as a young researcher at the National Museum of Slovenia. From 2003 to 2014, she worked as a scientific or senior scientific researcher at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRS) in Koper. From 2003 to 2010, she served as an assistant at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Humanities in Koper. In 2010, she joined the Regional Museum of Koper as a curator, where she works as a museum advisor in archaeology. Since 2024, she has been partially employed at the ZRS Koper as a scientific associate.
