Dr. Gorazd Bajc (1972) is a Full Professor at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor, where he teaches the history of Europe, the Balkans, and the Slovenian territory in the 20th century. At the Faculty of Arts in Maribor, he also serves as Vice-Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies, a member of the Management Board, Head of the Institute for Research Activities, the faculty’s representative on the Council of the UM Doctoral School, and a deputy member of the Programme Committee of the E-RIH.SI Consortium. He has also served as the humanities representative in the University of Maribor Working Group for drafting regulations in accordance with the new Research and Development Act of the Republic of Slovenia. He is also a member of the Committee of the Republic of Slovenia for the Awarding of Prizes and Recognitions for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research and Development, the Committee for the Study of National Minorities at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), the ARIS Scientific Council for the Humanities, the Historical Society of South Primorska, the Regional Institute for the History of the Resistance and Contemporary History in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trieste, and the Slovene Research Institute (SLORI) in Italy.
His research interests include the history of international relations, intelligence services, Yugoslav/Slovenian-Italian relations, the legal status of the Slovenian minority in Italy, and violence. In recent years, he has focused intensively on original research into the role of women antifascists from the Littoral and Istria before the Second World War, the international aspects of the breakup of Yugoslavia, and heritage science. His research is based on the systematic analysis of unpublished primary sources held in numerous archives in Slovenia and abroad, particularly in London, Rome, Trieste, Udine, Prague, Belgrade, and the United States. He has lectured and collaborated with universities and academic institutions in Italy, Austria, Russia, Ukraine, the United States, Serbia, and Croatia.
He is the author of three scholarly monographs, as well as several co-authored works. In 2021, he and Prof. Dr. Borut Klabjan published a book on the Slovene National Hall in Trieste, Ogenj, ki je zajel Evropo, which was shortlisted for the ARRS Excellence in Science achievements, and two years later an Italian edition was published by the Bologna-based publisher Il Mulino. He has also published more than 80 scholarly articles and studies, edited or co-edited nine scholarly monographs, and co-authored five exhibitions, one documentary film, and two radio series. He serves on the editorial boards of two high-impact scholarly journals, Acta Histriae and Annales – Series Historia et Sociologia.
He has led three projects and participated in several others, including the European ERC project EIRENE, led at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, by Prof. Dr. Marta Verginella. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious European Commission Seal of Excellence, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Seal of Excellence. At the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor, he currently leads the research programme Slovenian Identity and Cultural Awareness in Linguistically and Ethnically Contacting Areas in the Past and Present, the programme group Heritage Science and Climate Change: New Research with an Interdisciplinary Approach and the Use of Artificial Intelligence, and the major ARIS project AID HCH – Advancing Humanities and Cultural Heritage through Artificial Intelligence. Since June 2026, he has been involved in the European ERC project OPEN BORDERS, led at the Science and Research Centre Koper by Prof. Dr. Borut Klabjan.
