Biography:
Prof. Dr. Carool Kersten holds an MA (cum laude) in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies (1987, Radboud University Nijmegen – the Netherlands); a Graduate Certificate in Southeast Asian Studies (2001, Payap University – Thailand), a PhD in the Study of Religions (2009, SOAS – University of London) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (2010, King’s College London).
At ZRS, Carool Kersten is a Senior Research Associate of the Institute for Philosophical and Religious Studies. He is also a Research Professor in Islamic Studies at Catholic University Leuven (Belgium). Previously he worked at King’s College London (2007-2022), lastly as Reader (Associate Professor) in the Study of Islam and the Muslim World. He has also been a tutor in the divinity degree programme of the University of London Worldwide; associate lecturer at the Open University (UK); guest lecturer at the Institute of Ismaili Studies (London); faculty member at the International and Graduate Studies Center of Payap University (Thailand); and academic director of a study-abroad programme.
Carool Kersten has written four single-authored research monographs and (co-) edited several essay collections in the fields of Islamic studies and philosophy, as well as multi-volume anthologies on Islamic political thought and law. His main publications include:
