From 15 to 19 June 2026, Piran hosted the international TBrainBoost Summer School 3.0: Innovations in Neuroscience of Movement, Neurorehabilitation, and Digital Health, bringing together students, early-career researchers and clinicians from around the world. The event took place at the Marine Biology Station Piran, which provided participants with facilities for lectures and workshops, as well as accommodation.
The summer school forms part of the European project TBrainBoost – Era Talents for boosting and balancing brain circulation, which promotes the application of neuroscience discoveries in the development of neurorehabilitation products and services. Funded by the European Union and coordinated by the Science and Research Centre Koper, the four-year project aims to strengthen international and intersectoral mobility and foster cooperation between academia, industry and society in the field of healthy ageing.
This year’s programme offered a rich combination of TEDx-style lectures, practical workshops, group projects, career-oriented discussions and conversations with international experts. The main topics included the neuroscience of movement, neurorehabilitation, digital health, exergaming and artificial intelligence in medicine. The programme was designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students from various fields—including kinesiology, physiotherapy, psychology, cognitive neuroscience and biomedical engineering—as well as early-career researchers.
The speakers included experts from renowned international institutions such as ETH Zurich, Stony Brook University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the IRCCS San Camillo Hospital in Venice, alongside Slovenian experts from the Science and Research Centre Koper and AMEU. Among them was Prof. Jeannette R. Mahoney of Stony Brook University in New York, who developed CatchU, a scientifically validated digital tool for assessing the risk of falls among older adults, and Dr Eduardo Bodnariuc Fontes of Stonehill College, whose research connects physical exercise, brain stimulation and cognitive abilities.
TBrainBoost brings together nine partners from several European countries and pursues three key objectives: strengthening cooperation between academia and industry, promoting lifelong learning among research staff, and improving the employability and entrepreneurial skills of early-career researchers. Particular emphasis is placed on transferring knowledge from laboratories into practice and developing innovative solutions to the challenges of an ageing society.
In addition to its comprehensive academic programme, the summer school offered participants opportunities to network and exchange ideas in Piran’s picturesque coastal setting, characterised by its Venetian architecture and Mediterranean atmosphere. The integration of knowledge, technology, entrepreneurship and international cooperation remains one of the central foundations of the TBrainBoost project, which will conclude in 2027.
