Viticulture and wine production are one of the most important economic and agricultural sectors in the Istrian region. Despite the many excellent research institutions in Slovenia, the local community, vineyard owners, wine producers and knowledge users have found that the scientific research development of viticulture and winemaking in the Primorska wine-growing region is very underdeveloped. In response, the Scientific Council of the ZRS Koper with the support of local communities and national and international knowledge institutions, established the Institute for Viticulture and Enology in 2023. The Institute will research and develop new knowledge and solutions to meet the needs of wine production and processing in the Primorska wine-growing region, through collaboration and identification of the problems and challenges faced by local vineyard owners and wine processors. The acquired new knowledge and identified needs will serve as a basis for the development strategy of viticulture and wine production in the Slovenian Istrian region, with the main goal of increasing the awareness of Istrian wines worldwide and contributing to the growth and development of the local wine industry.
