The Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and the “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum in Piran invite you on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM to the Monfort exhibition Hall (former salt warehouse), Obala 8, in Portorož, for the presentation of the monograph Fragments of the Far East: commemorative and decorative objects in the mariners’ legacies in Slovenia.
The monograph will be presented by its editors and contributors: Dr Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik and Dr Maja Veselič from the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana; Bogdana Marinac from the “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum in Piran; and Dr Helena Motoh from the Science and Research Centre Koper.
The collection provides an in-depth exploration of a topic previously presented in the exhibition Fragments of the Far East: commemorative and decorative objects in the mariners’ legacies in Slovenia at the “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum in Piran. It focuses on objects brought back from their travels by seafarers from the Slovenian territory from the mid-19th century to the 1960s. It highlights their history, role, and significance in East Asia, as well as after their transfer to a new environment. The life stories of these objects are also traced through narratives about the seafarers and their journeys, while providing insight into their practices of collecting and acquiring such items.
The book was published by the University of Ljubljana Press, Faculty of Arts, in cooperation with and with the financial support of the “Sergej Mašera” Maritime Museum in Piran. It was created as part of the project Orphaned Objects: Examining East Asian Objects Outside Organized Collecting Practices in Slovenia (J6-3133; 2021–2025), funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS).
