At a time when discussions about ecology, human nature, and ethics are becoming increasingly indispensable, philosophy is returning to the concepts of breathing and temperament as fundamental dimensions of human experience. This opens up new avenues for reflecting on the relationships between philosophy, culture, and life itself, and encourages deeper reflection on the relationship between humans and the environment.
These topics will be the focus of an international scientific event to be held on 5 February 2026, at the University of Latvia in Riga. The keynote speaker will be Prof. Dr. Lenart Škof, Head of the Institute for Philosophical and Religious Studies at ZRS Koper and Dean of the ISH Faculty at Alma Mater Europaea University. In his lecture, entitled The Forgetting of Breath in the Humanities, he will present his research focus, which brings into dialogue the philosophy of breath, intersubjectivity, ethics, and questions of peace.
Dr. Pier Francesco Corvino, researcher at IFRŠ ZRS Koper and head of the international research project THuNB – Temperamental Roots of the Human–Nature Bond (HORIZON-WIDERA-2024-TALENTS-02 – 101244237), will talk about temperament as a key philosophical category for understanding the relationship between humans and nature in his lecture entitled An Unusual Case of Temperament: On the Elementarity Nature of Ecocriticism and the Crime Novel.
