International scientific conference: “RELIGIOUS CONVERSIONS AND ATHEISATION IN 20TH CENTURY CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE”

From 22 to 24 April 2024, the international scientific conference “Religious Conversions and Atheization in 20th Century Central and Eastern Europe” will take place, organised by the Institute for Historical Studies of ZRS Koper at the Centre for Humanities of ZRS Koper (Kreljeva ulica 6, Koper).

Within the framework of the ARIS project (No. N6-0173) “Religious Changes in Slovenia and Yugoslavia: Religious Conversions and Processes of Atheisation”, an international conference on the topics of religious conversions, atheisation and religious revival in the area of Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th century will be held.

The conference will shed light on (largely) unexplored topics from a more differentiated perspective on the mechanisms that promote religious change and redefine the relationships between the state and religious communities.

The primary aim of the conference will be to analyse how religious conversions, processes of atheisation (deconversions) and religious revival of non-dominant and dominant religions (reconversions), which trace their roots to interfaith interactions, political disagreements and national religious policies and are often connected with ethnicity and migrations, lead to a redefinition and transformation of the boundaries of religions.

Experts from the fields of history, anthropology, religious studies, theology, political science, international relations and sociology from Europe and the United States of America will participate in the three-day event.
