Knowledge Transfers Among Communities and Environments: Exploring Salt-Working Practices

Cervia: The Coexistence of Manual and Mechanized Salt Production

Scinece and Research Centre Koper (SRC Koper), as part of the projects Consortium for Knowledge Transfer – KTO3 and the basic research project Grain of Salt, Crystallizing Cohabitation: Salt- Making as Experiential Environmental Wisdom, organized the third event in the series Knowledge Transfers Between Communities and Environments: Learning About Salt-Making Practices on Friday, March 6, 2026. This event was titled Cervia: The Coexistence of Manual and Mechanized Salt Production.

At the event held at the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, researcher Dr Maja Bjelica from the Institute for Philosophical and Religious Studies at SRC Koper presented the findings of an eco-ethnographic study on contemporary traditional salt-working at the saltwork of the Italian town of Cervia. This area boasts a centuries-old tradition of salt-working, which is preserved today both in its traditional manual form and through modernized methods using machinery.

The event aimed to facilitate the transfer of knowledge about the latest research findings, experiential practices, and insights gained through the study of salt-working as a specific expertise – transmitted through experience, work, and close interaction with the environment. It also provided an opportunity to thank the company Soline d.o.o. and all its employees for their hospitality and support in implementing the basic research project.

We are pleased to have the opportunity to share our research insights—gained through collaboration, observation, and learning—with the wider public, the economy, local communities, and direct users of knowledge.

The project Consortium for Knowledge and Technology Transfer – KTO3 is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The scientific work of the basic research project Grain of Salt, Crystallizing Cohabitation: Salt-Making as Experiential Environmental Wisdom (J6-50196) is funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS).
