About the book
Kardelj: A Socialist Utopian in Power is a comprehensive scholarly monograph on one of the key architects of socialist Yugoslavia, a leading Party ideologue and Josip Broz Tito’s closest long-time associate. The book focuses primarily on Kardelj’s years in power, tracing his transformation from a disciplined revolutionary and Comintern agent into one of the principal architects of the Yugoslav model of socialism following the split with Stalin. Particular attention is devoted to the development of socialist self-management and Kardelj’s conviction that Marx’s theory could be developed into a model of society capable of transcending both capitalism and Soviet socialism. Through political conflicts, theoretical shifts, compromises and disappointments, the book follows the growing gap between Kardelj’s socialist vision and political reality. It is therefore not only a biographical portrait, but also an in-depth analysis of the ideology and political system that profoundly shaped Yugoslav history and the 20th century.
