The short audiobook provides insight into the work of young researcher Ana Cikač and Dr Saša Pišot from the Institute for Kinesiology Research (ZRS Koper), who explore bed rest studies as a research model from a psychosocial perspective. Such studies offer a rare opportunity to understand how people cope with stressful environments under conditions of extreme physical inactivity.
Findings show that interpersonal relationships play a key role in adapting to the specific conditions of these studies. However, it remains unclear how social connectedness and feelings of isolation interact in such situations. The motivations for participation and how individuals make sense of their experience are also not well understood.
The authors therefore emphasise the importance of incorporating qualitative approaches, which provide deeper insight into individuals’ experiences and a better understanding of bodily responses under extreme conditions. Although this is a highly specific research model, its implications extend beyond the laboratory, as physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyles are increasingly common in everyday life.
