The Language and Social Innovation Lab (LangLab) is a response to the challenges of the environment in which the Science and Research Centre Koper (ZRS Koper) is embedded. It is a response to the demand for specific research into the contact zones of the Mediterranean and Europe in order to enable a deeper understanding of the linguistic complexity, social definition and intertwining of languages and cultures that characterise these areas. The Northern Mediterranean represents a natural laboratory and offers challenges to researchers primarily in the field of linguistics, but also strongly embedded in other humanities and social sciences. It therefore enables them to pursue their research ambitions through empirical research and applied studies in direct contact with what is happening in the field. As an infrastructure unit of the ZRS Koper, LangLab develops participatory methods through its applied research, uses analogue and digital tools and tests pedagogical approaches that open up new perspectives on language and offer practical solutions to linguistic, intercultural and communicative issues. It collaborates with similar laboratories and centres that develop mechanisms for sustainable language policy and promote multilingualism and interculturality, as well as social dialogue in education, research and direct language use.
