As part of the AGRA 2026 International Fair of Agriculture and Food, an interactive workshop entitled “From Food-Processing Industry Residues to Soil Improvers – Practical Results of Waste4Soil” will take place on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, from 12:30 to 14:00 in Hall 3 in Gornja Radgona.
The workshop will focus on a key question: Does the EU Fertiliser Action Plan mean fewer barriers to closing nutrient loops using available local resources and strengthening strategic autonomy through domestically produced fertilisers?
The event is organised by the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, KOTO d.o.o. and the Science and Research Centre Koper.
Within the European Waste4Soil project, we are developing solutions to transform safe and suitable residues from the food-processing industry into soil improvers and other useful products. The project brings together research institutions, businesses, farmers and other stakeholders within the Slovenia–Istria Living Lab, with the aim of strengthening circular approaches and creating practical solutions for the sustainable use of locally available resources.
This year’s workshop continues the process initiated at AGRA 2025. Participants will review what has been achieved over the past year, identify the barriers that remain and explore new opportunities for the wider use of locally produced fertilisers and soil improvers.
The discussion will address the practical results already available within Waste4Soil, possibilities for increasing the circular use of local resources and nutrients, and developments at EU level that could create new opportunities for domestically produced fertilisers and soil improvers. Participants will also examine the regulatory, technical and market barriers that still prevent the wider uptake of these solutions and consider how to better connect the food-processing industry, agriculture, research and the market.
The workshop will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences, present practical results and jointly develop proposals for further action. The transition towards a more circular and strategically autonomous agricultural system requires cooperation among a wide range of stakeholders, making dialogue between research, industry, agriculture and other actors essential.
