PRIMORSKE NOVICE: The European SUPRAS Project on Suspects’ Rights in the Digital Age

Benjamin Flander, PhD, of the ZRS Koper Law Institute presented the SUPRAS project (SUspects’ PRivilege Against Self-incrimination and access to password-protected and encrypted data on digital devices) in the Na valovih znanja supplement of the newspaper Primorske novice. The project is funded by the European Commission under the JUSTICE Programme.

The project addresses one of the most pressing issues in criminal proceedings: when a phone, computer or other so-called smart device is seized, can the police compel a suspect to provide a password, unlock the device using a fingerprint or facial recognition, and/or provide an encryption key or the data in unencrypted form?
