Invitation to the Round Table “Slovenian–Chinese Cooperation in Science”

On Thursday, 18 June, at 11:00 a.m.,

the Centre for the Humanities of the Science and Research Centre Koper (6 Kreljeva Street) will host a round-table discussion entitled “Slovenian–Chinese Cooperation in Science.”

The event is organised by the Science and Research Centre Koper (Institute for Philosophical and Religious Studies) and the Slovenian–Chinese Business Council of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia.

Two hundred and eighty years after the Slovenian Jesuit Augustin Hallerstein participated in the installation of astronomical instruments at the Imperial Observatory in Beijing, Slovenian and Chinese researchers are collaborating across numerous fields and achieving significant results that rarely receive wider public attention. Institutions and individual researchers from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technology and medicine cooperate with Chinese partners on a wide range of current scientific topics, while their joint projects rank among examples of world-class scientific excellence.

The round-table discussion will therefore focus on various aspects of Slovenian–Chinese cooperation in science. Researchers from different disciplines will share their experiences of working with Chinese colleagues and highlight their joint achievements, the current state of research cooperation between the two countries and possible directions for future collaboration.

The following speakers will take part in the discussion:

  • Dr Žiga Vavpotič, President of the Slovenian–Chinese Business Council;
  • Dr Helena Motoh, Director of the Centre for Asian Studies at the Science and Research Centre Koper;
  • Prof. Dr Griša Močnik, Director of the Centre for Atmospheric Research at the University of Nova Gorica;
  • Dr Nataša Viršek Ravbar, Director of the Karst Research Institute at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The round table will be moderated by Nina Slaček, a journalist at Radio Slovenia.

The event is funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS) within the framework of the research programme “Border Areas: Areas of Cultural and Social Cohabitation in the Age of Risk and Vulnerability” (No. P6-0279).
