In his monograph, Jože Pirjevec examines the most creative yet also the most controversial period in the life of one of the principal architects of Yugoslav socialism. The book focuses on Kardelj’s years in power, during which he evolved from a disciplined Comintern agent into a leading ideological revisionist of Stalinism and the chief architect of Yugoslavia’s system of socialist self-management following the break with Stalin.
As a pre-war revolutionary, Yugoslavia’s foremost ideologue, and an influential statesman, Kardelj believed he was destined to develop Marxist doctrine further by providing a practical blueprint for how socialism, once the dictatorship of the proletariat had been established, should evolve into communism. Through a dramatic and intellectually demanding narrative, the reader follows his efforts—marked by defeats, humiliations, disputes with comrades, and theoretical shifts—which ultimately culminated in the realization that Yugoslavia was not ready for his utopian vision.
Accompanied by extensive scholarly apparatus and rich visual material, the monograph offers an in-depth insight into the events and ideas that shaped the twentieth century.
