The Science and Research Centre (ZRS) Koper, in collaboration with the Koper Theatre, is organizing the third spring event of the SPOZNAJ series – Relaxed Conversations on Science, which will take place on Tuesday, 26 May, at 7 p.m. in the small hall of the Koper Theatre.
The title of this edition will be “Science and the Public: Who Do We Trust in the Age of Algorithms?”, focusing on science communication.
How is scientific knowledge transferred into the public sphere? Why is quality communication between researchers and the wider public essential for informed citizenship? How can we communicate effectively with the public?
In contemporary society, marked by digital transformation, algorithmic filters, and the rapidly growing volume of information, the ability to distinguish reliable scientific knowledge from disinformation has become one of the key democratic competencies.
Our guests will include:
- Dr Lučka Kajfež Bogataj, climatologist and member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Geneva, as well as co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize;
- Janko Petrovec, editor-in-chief of Radio Koper and former RTV Slovenia correspondent from Rome;
- Nik Škrlec, actor, television host, and digital content creator;
- Dr Tilen Genov, president of the Morigenos society, active in scientific research, education, public awareness, and marine environmental protection;
- Dr Blaž Lenarčič, research associate at the Institute for Social Studies at ZRS Koper, whose work includes digital technologies and society.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr Gašper Pirc, research associate at the Institute for Philosophical and Religious Studies and author of the recently published book Virtual Worlds and the Values of the Digital Future.
Through a relaxed yet in-depth discussion with distinguished guests from the worlds of science and media, we aim to contribute to greater awareness of the importance of critically reading and understanding the world around us. Through the SPOZNAJ events – Relaxed Conversations on Science – ZRS Koper strives to bring the content of scientific research out of offices and laboratories and closer to the wider public.
Admission is free, but registration is possible by 25 May via .
The event will be recorded and will later be available on the ZRS Koper YouTube channel.
