Prof. Dr. Livio Jakomin is an honorary citizen of the Municipality of Koper

The Mayor of the Municipality of Koper, Aleš Bržan, conferred the title of honorary citizen upon Prof. Dr. Livio Jakomin during a ceremonial session held on Saturday, 16 May 2026, on the occasion of the municipal holiday. Among those advocating recognition of his achievements was also the Science and Research Centre Koper (ZRS Koper), where Prof. Dr. Jakomin served for many years as a member of the governing board and made an important contribution to the establishment of both ZRS Koper and the University of Primorska.

With this ceremonial session, the Municipality of Koper gained its eighth honorary citizen. Upon the mayor’s proposal, the Municipal Council awarded the prestigious title to the distinguished educator, scientist and businessman born in Prade, who actively participated in the social and political life of Slovenian Istria and the Republic of Slovenia. Prof. Dr. Livio Jakomin gained extensive experience, among other roles, as director of the Energy and Industrial Zone of the Port of Koper, and also served on the governing boards of ZRS Koper and the University of Primorska. His bibliography includes more than 300 works. For his achievements he received numerous recognitions and awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport, and was also decorated with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Republic of Slovenia. The Municipal Council awarded him the title of honorary citizen of the Municipality of Koper for his long-standing work in education, science, economy, politics, diplomacy and culture, through which he made a decisive contribution to the development of maritime affairs, higher education, the economy, and the social and cultural life of Koper, Slovenian Istria and the wider Slovenian area.

During the ceremonial session, the mayor also presented two additional awards. The Grand Plaque Award was presented to the Cultural Association Marezige Wind Orchestra for its exceptional and lasting contribution to the development of musical culture, the preservation of the rich tradition of wind music, and the strengthening of cultural identity and social cohesion in the local community on the occasion of its 120th anniversary of uninterrupted activity. The same award was also presented to Marija Knez for her exceptional personal contribution to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage and for her many years of dedicated work in the field of amateur culture and social life in the rural areas of the Municipality of Koper.
