ZRS LangLab Organised an International Online Seminar

The Laboratory for Linguistic and Social Innovation (ZRS LangLab), in cooperation with the European Association of Professors Emeriti (EAPE), organised an international online seminar on 5 March titled “Language Hegemony of Lingua Franca in Research and Higher Education: Ethical Issues”.

The speakers were:

G.- Andrei Dan, Professor Emeritus at the University of Medicine “Carol Davila”, Bucharest, Romania

Michael Biggs, Professor Emeritus at the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

Lucija Čok, ZRS LangLab

The speakers addressed ethical questions arising from the dominance of a global lingua franca and the vitality of national languages. English, as the primary language of teaching, scientific publications, and conferences, and its widespread use in academia, confirms the predominance of a single language in key domains of communication. The marginalisation of national languages may particularly endanger less widely spoken, minority, and regional languages. Linguistic inequality thus becomes an ethical issue, as it can reduce individual autonomy in social interactions, limit the rights of individuals to use their native language, and affect the ability of linguistic communities to develop their languages across all domains of use.

The webinar, moderated by Prof. Dr Lucija Čok, was attended by participants

from Italy, the United Kingdom, Greece, Romania, Canada, and other countries.
