The Institute for Social Studies of the Science and Research Centre Koper becomes a partner in a three-year project centred around the research and cultivation of culture literacy through art (EXPECT_Art – Horizon Europe)

The project consortium, led by a group of researchers from the University of Southern Denmark, has achieved an immense success by acquiring an international research project in the framework of the Horizon Europe tender published by the European Commission. The fact that only the most innovative applications with potentially significant effects for the wider society have been successfully selected in the tender is an additional recognition for partner institutions. The project will take place in Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Spain and Slovenia, and will reunite 13 research institutions and partners from the cultural and creative industries. In addition to the Institute for Social Studies of the Science and Research Centre Koper, Slovenia is also represented by the “Portret” Association for the Development of Creativity and Potentials.

The project EXPECT_Art (Exploring and Educating Cultural Literacy through Art, no. 101132662) aims to promote critical cultural literacy through art and its use in various educational contexts in Europe. The research will be conducted by means of community-based research methods, including artistic approaches and active involvement of children and employees in education, as well as other public actors.

The activities of the project are spread over a three-year period, from January 2024 to December 2027, and amount to a total value of EUR 2,998,326. One of the results of the project will be a Cultural Literacy Hub, a dynamic hub for activities intended to strengthen cultural literacy in various groups, including children, young people, pedagogical staff, NGOs, policy makers, and other citizens. This interactive platform will offer a set of tools and activities in the field of cultural literacy that will be tailored to the needs of different groups. EXPECT_Art is not only a research project but also a vision of the future of art education using art in Europe. Project activities include the development of a university course and a handbook, seminars for employees in education, educational aids, and a series of policy recommendations. The project represents a step towards transforming the understanding of the role of education through art and art education in fostering a more diverse understanding of culture in Europe.
