The Centre for the Study of Medicine and the Body in the Renaissance (CSMBR)

The Centre for the Study of Medicine and the Body in the Renaissance (CSMBR) is an international institute of advanced studies in the history of medicine and science based at the Domus Comeliana in Pisa.

Co-sponsored by seven major funding institutions across Europe and the United States (Yale University, the Universities of Exeter, Würzburg, Lisbon and Parma, the Edward Worth Library, Dublin, and the Studio Firmano), the CSMBR is Italy’s foremost independent institution devoted to the medical humanities.

At the heart of the CSMBR is an international community of scholars working across the medical humanities. The Centre promotes conferences, grants, fellowships, publications, and long-term collaborative projects that create opportunities for dialogue across disciplines and among scholars at different career stages. Its activities span the period from Antiquity to the eighteenth century. Its publishing programme includes two international book series—Palgrave Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Medicine (Springer Nature) and Ars Longa: Texts and Traditions of Medicine from Antiquity to 1800 (Brepols)—as well as an editorial partnership with Sudhoffs Archiv, the world’s oldest journal devoted to the history of medicine and science.

The partnership between the CSMBR and the ZRS Koper arises naturally from the complementary missions of the two institutions.

Both the CSMBR and the ZRS share a commitment to the study of the Renaissance as an interconnected space of cultural exchange. Together, the two institutions collaborate on international research projects that bring together scholars exploring the rich intellectual, scientific, and medical legacy of the premodern Mediterranean. They also jointly promote scholarly initiatives designed to strengthen academic cooperation and mobility, most notably the Santorio Residential Fellowship.
