He coedited with Professor Lenart Škof first anthology on philosophy of breathing titled Atmospheres of Breathing (SUNY Press, 2018). His upcoming book is titled Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing (Routledge, 2022) and it will be the first publication of a new book series "Routledge Critical Perspectives on Breath and Breathing".
The field of Berndtson's research is respiratory philosophy. In his PhD dissertation, he developed a new phenomenological method called respiratory reduction. This method of phenomenologico-respiratory reduction makes possible to rethink, re-examine and re-experience all phenomena and questions of life within the experiential atmosphere of breathing. Berndtson has studied in a phenomenologico-respiratory manner, for example, the questions of ontology, poetics, religion and ethics (hospitality, peace).
