Institute for Social Studies

In the presence of contemporary social changes, among which migration, cultural diversity, management of intercultural contacts and rise of populist movements at the national and European level appear especially momentous, several research challenges have emerged in the field of ethnic and intercultural studies. Researchers at the Institute for Social Studies study political and symbolic borders, nationalisms, cross-border contacts, European (dis)integration, lives of ethnic minorities, various aspects of migration, and similar.

Institute for Philosophical Studies

The institute is the core institution in the Primorska region that studies classical and contemporary philosophical topics. The researchers at the Institute are experts in modern philosophy, social and environmental ethics, comparative religion studies including theology and feminist studies. The field of intercultural philosophy is also well developed within the scope of Institute’s work, combining the researchers in the fields of Islamic, Indian and Chinese philosophies.

Institute for Linguistic studies

The mission of the Institute is to follow the dynamics and issues in the linguistic and literary field with particular attention to the contact areas, such as the Slovenian-Italian-Croatian area. Institute for Oliveculture

Nineteen centuries ago, it was the Greek historian Pausanias who probably mentioned Istrian olive oil for the first time. Later on, olive trees of this area were described by Carlo Hugues in his work Elaiografia Istriana, and olives became the focal point of research for the two beginners of the modern day oliveculture, professor France Adamič, Ph.D., and Stanko Kovačič, Ph.D. The development of an olive oil brand was the first research project of the Scientific and Research Centre.

Institute for Historical Studies

The Institute of Historical Studies has in the years from its foundation become established as the Slovenian and European historical reference point for researching the history of the coastal area of western Slovenia as well as the key actor in establishing the views of Slovenian history and its different geographical parts. By examining the area of Primorska region as the 'contact area' of cultures, mentalities and nations, the Institute significantly contributed to the awareness and the knowledge about the historical image of the Slovenian Mediterranean.

Law Institute

Law Institute was founded with the aim to widen the area of research covered by the ZRS Koper institutes. Future goal of the Institute is to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon of law, which is enabled by the cooperation with other institutes within the framework of Science and Research Centre, especially with the Institute for Philosophical Studies, Institute for Social Studies, Institute of Historical Studies, Institute for Linguistic Studies and others.

Mediterranean Institute for Environmental Studies

With an interdisciplinary and holistic approach, The Mediterranean Institute for Environmental Studies aims to contribute to a rational, sustainable and inclusive development of society, reconciling economic development with environment. Research goals are harmonized with social values, ethics, stakeholders’ interests, local and global priorities for conservation of ecosystem services and biodiversity. Through the program of scientific and research work, the Institute promotes the transition to low-carbon society, adaptation to climate changes and a human development within Earth’ carrying capacity.

Laboratory of the Institute for Oliveculture

Laboratory is highly specialized infrastructural unit and was appointed as the holder of the national etalon in the field of food of plant origin/olive oil with the decision issued by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia. With excellent analytical equipment and top-level personnel, it achieves excellent results, since it has been ranked among the authorized International Olive Council Laboratories ever since 2004. Along that the national panel for sensory testing of virgin olive oil is also accredited within the laboratory. Laboratory holds the SIST EN ISO 17025 accreditation.

The laboratory offers infrastructure support mainly to the research work of the Institute for Kinesiology Research. With a complex and modern measuring equipment, it provides a starting point for further development towards the unique Diagnostic Center in Primorska intended for different target groups, from children to the elderly, top and recreational athletes, as well as to the general, unfortunately, less and less active population.

ANNALES ZRS, Scientific Publishing House of ZRS Koper

The publishing activity of the Annales ZRS is based on the traditional approach of intellectual property development and, consequently, on the dissemination of the academic and didactic production of the scientific community. Its successful operation significantly contributes to the reputation of the Slovenian scientific and academic sphere.
