Young researcher Barbara Gornik presented the findings of her research on the influence of nationalism and cosmopolitan values on the attitude towards refugees at the international conference 'International Relations and Human Rights - special focus: Human rights and Migration', hosted by the School of Governance, Law and Society, University of Tallin.

Within the scope of the MinAs research project, co-financed by the EU, we have prepared an extensive and very current book A JOURNEY TO THE UNKNOWN, The rights of Uanccompanied Migrant Children: Between theory and practice on the issue of unaccompanied minors' treatment in 4 European countries and the broader EU context.

Institute for Social Studies and other MinAs project partners have organised a successful international conference Children and Young People on the Move: toward a more precise definition of their best interests on the issue of unaccompanied minors. Eminent speakers shed light on the issue and the audience also took part in the lively debate on the current topic.

Erasmus exchange in Lithuania

In the scope of the Erasmus exchange, members of the Institute for Social Studies, Dr Mateja Sedmak and Msc Zorana Medarić visited Vilnius, Lithuania, held lectures at Verslo Vadybos Fakultetas and met with representatives of the office for international cooperation. 


Fairytale hours at Koper schools and kindergartens

April-June 2015

 

In the Intercultural connecting on the wings of stories project we are conducting fairytale hours at Koper schools and kindergartens. The fairytale hours are led by representatives of different cultures, living in Koper (e.g. Australia, Azerbeijan, Bosnia, India, Indonesia, Macedonia, Russia and Serbia), who present their culture through folk tales. With the workshops and media presence we aim to contribute to intercultural awareness of the youth as well as general public on the meaning of intercultural dialogue and ethnical diversity. 

Project is financed by Ministry of the Interior and the European Union.

Bridges of Expertise of Fight Gender Based Violence partners’ meeting in Koper

On the 26th November 2014 Italian and Turkish partners of the project Bridges of Expertise to Fight Gender Based Violence visited Koper. In the scope of the visit, partners' meeting was organised at the Centre for social work, followed by the presentation of the work of the Institute of social studies in this field, which was held in the library of the Science and Research Centre. Later on, partners also visited the Day-care and Crisis Centre for Children and Youth in Koper and participated in the activities honouring the day against violence targeted at women.

Simposyum »Culture of Mixedness«

In June 2014 members of the Institute for Social Studies and the Section for Intercultural Studies of the Slovenian Sociological Association organized the “Culture of Mixedness” symposium at the Science and Research Centre. Several researchers from the field of transculturality and cultural contact have presented their papers on “culture of mixedness” from various approaches. Presentations were held in two sections; first “Theoretical view” was moderated by Dr Mateja Sedmak, while the second, “Empirical studies” was moderated by Dr Ana Kralj. The abstracts of the presented papers are available in the conference proceedings.
