16th Slovene Language Summer Course on the  Slovene Coast

KOPER/CAPODISTRIA 13. 7. - 26. 7. 2009

We are pleased to inform you about the 16th Slovene Language Summer Course on the Slovene Coast. The Summer Course entitled HELLO, THIS IS THE SLOVENE MEDITERRANEAN!, organized by the Faculty of Humanities Koper and the Science and Research Centre of Koper at the University of Primorska will be held in Koper from 13th July to 26th July 2009.

The course is intended for all who wish to learn Slovene language or improve their knowledge and get to know Slovenia and its culture in spending two pleasant summer weeks by the Slovene sea.

The main aim of the Summer Course was achieved in the last fifteenth years. We combined the usefulness of learning Slovene and getting more familiar with Slovenia with the pleasures of spending two summer weeks by the sea. The results of language tests as well as participants' impressions gathered in a newsletter and the results of a questionnaire showed how successful the Summer Course was. We are also very glad to see that many participants are coming back each year.

This year, we have organised several new activities. The 4th Summer School META Humanities (Mediterranean Summer School of Theoretical and Applied Humanities), which will take place from

June 29 – July 11, 2009.The theme of our Summer School this year is " WATERS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN". The program of META Humanities summer school is divided into a common plenary session: Perspectives of Living Together in the Mediterranean Contact Area, and three courses: Course A: Water – Environmental Conditions and Economic-Geographical Perspectives, Course B: Perceptions of Water within the Anthropological and Historical Context of the Mediterranean, Course C: Representation of Water in Mythology, Literature and Language. The participant can choose one, two or all three courses. Each course is 3 ECTS. The lectures of different courses are not at the same time, so you can follow all three courses.

Please find enclosed our leaflets and posters with further information about the Slovene Language Summer Course on the Slovene Coast 2009 and the META Humanities Summer School 2009.

Allow us to invite you to take part in our activities in the Mediterranean town of Koper, and thank you for informing everyone who would be interested in attending the Summer Course and/or META Humanities Summer School.

What was happening in the previous years at the Summer Courses?

Courses that run under professional supervision of lecturers with years of experience in teaching foreigners are attended each year by 60-70 students from many countries (Italy, Austria, Croatia, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain, Sweden, the USA, China, Belgium, Ukraine, FYROM, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Monte Negro ...), some of them being regular visitors. The age structure is very versatile, including teenagers and persons over fifty years of age, and so are the motives for learning Slovene.

Although the strongest motive is the wish to speak Slovene well, students are not attracted merely by language courses themselves, but also by trips to interesting sites and a wide selection of afternoon and evening activities and events.

Lecturers

Course lectureres in the past years include: dr. Vesna Mikolič , Gita Vuga, Sonja Starc, Elen Slavec, Mojca Butinar Mužina, Barbara Baloh, Metka Mestnik Grad, Martina Mejak, Polona Lahajner, Senja Smajlagić, Bojana Milutinović, Lea Kalc Furlanič, Petra Jakulin, Darja Rakušček, Sabina Kravos in Karin Marc Bratina, Alen Mesarič, Boštjan Debelak, Patricija Dodič, Urška Kerin and Helena Dobrila. According to lecturers' reports and diaries the atmosphere in student groups was nice and full of learning enthusiasm, students regularly attended lessons and were eager to learn as much as possible.

The teaching methods used at the Summer Course are based on accepting language rules through communication models in various speech situation, rather than on descriptions of the language system. Student can therefore acquire the basic patterns of Slovene – which is especially important for beginner groups, but at the same time discover the Slovene language system the inductive way. In advanced student groups, practice and theoretical explanations are given more time, but the communication principle remains in the foreground, emphasizing the communicative and sociolinguistic aspect. Same amount of attention is dedicated to all 4 basic communication skills: oral and reading comprehension and spoken and written text formation.

Various afternoon courses and workshops are available to students where they can relax or become more familiar with Slovene language and culture. The workshops organised so far include workshops from the fields of folklore (mentor Mojca Lepej), music (mentors Karmen in Edi Bubnič, Igor Cvetko, Dolores Šturman, Maja Cilenšek), literature  (Damjana Fink, Karin Marc Bratina), puppet theatre (mentorja Brane Solce, Jelena Sitar), theatre (mentors Marjeta Morovič, Lea Širok, Nataša Matijevič), journalism (mentorici dr. Vesna  Mikolič, Barbara Baloh) and dance (Milan Škapin), workshops on Slavonic cultures (Vladka Tucović, Irina Makarova Tominec, dr. Agnieszka Bedkowska-Kopczyk), calligraphy workshop (Loredana Zega).

Every year, workshop attendants prepare something interesting for the final event; singers sing, theatre actors perform, in Slovene, of course - which is always a lot of fun! – dancers dance, journalists present the Summer Course magazine POLTEČ POLMEŠ (local expression for »bat«).
